Root canal treatment saves the tooth when it gets infected or injured. During the treatment, the pulp tissue of the tooth is removed.

Infection of the tooth: In this case, an untreated decay of the tooth may lead to inflammation and infection of the pulp. This can be dangerous when the infection spreads to the surrounding bony structures.

Root Canal Treatment can be done in a single visit or multiple visits. However, the dentist will decide the number of visits depending on a particular case. Anatomic variations in the roots, curved canals and severe infections are big challenges to the dentist who performs the root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment, contrary to the belief of many, is an absolutely painless procedure. During the initial visit, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to make the area numb and to ensure a painless procedure. After that, the canals are accessed and the infected tissue is removed using the root canal instruments. The canals are cleaned and made sterile using various medicaments and irrigating solutions.

After the canal is adequately shaped to receive the filling material, the filling material is placed into the canals to prevent future infection. The process of root canal filling seals the canal from contamination. Once the canals are filled and the tooth is asymptomatic, a crown is placed after preparation of the treated tooth. This is to strengthen the already weakened tooth structure. Apart from that, the normal color of the tooth is restored by placing such crowns.

Root canal treatment is also done for primary teeth which cannot be treated by using the normal restorative techniques. Doing such treatment for the primary teeth will keep the arch space as such and maintain it till the permanent successors are erupted.
